At the request of Council, an economic Development Strategic Planning Committee was developed in the fall of 2009.  Since that time, the committee has made recommendations to Council on the implementation of projects that will have a positive economic impact on the community over short, medium and long term time frames.  As part of the process prior to formal adoption of the Economic Development Strategic Plan, Council has requested that the proposed plan be reviewed by the community and that any relevant comments be included in the final report to Council.  

The Committee requests your assistance in reviewing the proposed projects that are outlined in this plan.  We are not looking for detailed commentary on how it should be done, what we need from you is your input on whether or not these projects are appropriate in our efforts to improve the economy of Gravenhurst.  We would also look for your comments and thoughts on other projects or directions to be taken that could become part of an expanded economic strategic plan.  

As with any business plan, this is the starting point on which we will build the framework from which our economy will grow.  The information presented here relating to Centre of Excellence, China Market, Muskoka Centre, Industrial/Business Park, Investment Attraction, Retail Attraction, Uptown Revitalization and Tourism Attraction, are the initial steps required to commence development of the project.  If we are to proceed with these projects, dependent upon approval from Council, committees will be developed and an expanded version (business plan) for the specific projects will be created to plot and direct the course of action required, along with information on costs, partners, etc.  Any gaps that exist within the material presented here will be identified and addressed during the development of a full business plan.  

As you review the Economic Development Strategic Plan you will find that some of the recommended projects are either completed or in process as they had to be acted on immediately.  In all cases these projects were approved by Council before proceeding.  

To assist in your review you will find a document entitled “Sector Analysis Report for the Town of Gravenhurst”, this report was compiled by McSweeney & Associates as part of the “Investment Attraction” project and development of relating marketing materials.  This information speaks to the demographic and economic profile of our community.
