FIRE DESTROYS ABANDONED BUILDING

GRAVENHURST, ON – At approximately 11:30 pm last night (June 8), the Gravenhurst Fire Department was alerted to a fire at 750 John Street near the dog park in Gravenhurst. The caller reported seeing flames and smoke at the derelict building.  Approximately 30 firefighters from Stations 1 and 2 responded to the blaze.

“A well-established fire was burning inside the old building when we arrived. The deep seated fire had taken a hold of the building which had obviously seen multiple renovations over the years,” said Fire Chief Larry Brassard.  Fire crews worked for several hours on the stubborn blaze before it took complete control of the building. Firefighters then concentrated on safety and protection of other nearby properties.

Crews worked at the scene into the daylight hours. No cause has been established for the fire and there is no estimate of damage.

The Fire Department wishes to thank members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Muskoka Paramedic Services and VERIDIAN Hydro who also attended the incident to support the extinguishment efforts as well as neighbours who supplied refreshments.
