‘Jakes Gift’ A Story of Remembrance

Opera House Journeys Back to Normandy

Gravenhurst, ON - In November, we remember, appropriately the multi-award-winning one-woman play ‘Jakes Gift’ comes to the Gravenhurst Opera House Tuesday November 14th.

‘Jake’s Gift’ tells the story of a Canadian WWII Veteran who reluctantly returns to Normandy for the 60th anniversary of D-Day.  While revisiting the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10 year-old from the local village whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts - most notably, the war-time death of his eldest brother.  At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and personalizes the story behind one soldier’s grave.

The play was created after performer Julia Mackey traveled to Normandy in June 2004 for the 60th anniversary ceremonies and spent a week touring the Normandy coast interviewing Canadian, British and American Veterans as well as tourists and French citizens.

In conjunction with this event, Juno Productions will present the Gravenhurst Royal Canadian Legion with a special print called “Fallen Hero”. This presentation will be made immediately following the performance by performer & playwright, Julia Mackey, and is a gift to our Legion from the Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation.  The goal of the Foundation is to create a memorial plaque for every Canadian soldier killed in the line of duty. To date, dozens of Legions across Canada and one in the UK have received this moving print.

“Continuing our Canada 150 celebrations and in commemoration of this year’s 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge, we are very proud to present this incredible play.  Our school community will have the opportunity to experience it in the afternoon and then it will be presented in the evening for the general public.  It really is something every Canadian should see,’ said Krista Storey, manager of arts and culture.

‘Jake’s Gift’ comes to Gravenhurst for one night only, Tuesday, November 14th, 7 pm, doors open at 6 pm.  Tickets are $25 (regular) and $10. Reserve your tickets today either by purchasing Online at
