TransCanada Supports Gravenhurst Fire Department
5K Donation will Contribute to a Safer Community

Gravenhurst, ON, – The Gravenhurst Fire Department training program received a big shot in the arm this week after a sizable donation was received from TransCanada. Gretchen Gordon Indigenous & Community Relations Liaison for TransCanada stopped by the fire hall on Harvie Street to deliver the cheque on Thursday.

“TransCanada is delighted to provide this donation in support of the great work that Gravenhurst Fire Department is doing in the community. We share an interest in keeping firefighters and the community safe and this donation will help first responders in Gravenhurst do just that,” said Gordon. “Safety is a core value at TransCanada.”

On hand for the cheque presentation were Tracy Jocque, training officer for the department and Fire Chief Larry Brassard. “The generous donation by TransCanada has allowed us to purchase a training manikin and smoke machines for use in dynamic training environments,” said Jocque. “The training manikin in particular will allow the department to more realistically train in search and rescue operations, water and ice rescue operations and vehicle rescue. The fact that we’re now able to simulate a variety of rescues will translate into better trained and more efficient fire crews, which ultimately prove to make our community safer,” she added.

“We’re appreciative of the support TransCanada has demonstrated as a corporate citizen of Gravenhurst,” said Brassard. TransCanada owns and operates high pressure natural gas pipelines that travel through Gravenhurst.  The company is in the midst of a major pipeline upgrade project in the southern portion of the town and helped train local volunteers earlier this year to be better prepared for natural gas emergencies. Fire crews have already started to train using the new equipment.
