Legends of ‘Toronto Sound’ Reunite at Gravenhurst Opera House
A Very Rare Occasion You Can be a Part of August 25th
Gravenhurst, ON – An all-star Canadian cast of award-winning blues and roots musicians will perform a special concert honouring the “Legends of the Toronto Sound” in Gravenhurst Saturday August 25th.
Under the direction of Juno Award winning producer and musical director Lance Anderson, the August 25th appearance at the Gravenhurst Opera House will bring together three icons of the ‘Toronto Sound’: The irrepressible John Finley (Checkmates, Rhinoceros), Jay Douglas (The Cougars) and Chuck Jackson (Downchild Blues Band). These renowned soul and R&B veterans have been honoured for their contribution to Toronto’s music scene, being featured on a 22-story high mural on Yonge St. in downtown Toronto completed in 2017.
“These singers and players are some of the best that Canada has to offer. They are the originals,” said Anderson.  “The music is a combination of Gospel and Blues that was born on the Mississippi in Memphis but was ground out in the clubs across Canada. This is not the slick soul of Detroit’s Motown, but the gritty Yonge St. R&B that captured Canada’s bar scene and turned Toronto into Canada’s soul city.”
This is truly an all-star ensemble, featuring Internationally known guitarist Danny Weis (Rhinoceros, Lou Reed, Bette Midler, Iron Butterfly), drummer Michael Sloski (The Checkmates, Bruce Cockburn) and bassist Collin Barrett, along with Simon Wallis (Lighthouse) on saxophone, Dave Dunlop (The Boss Brass) on trumpet and musical director Lance Anderson (Joint Chiefs of Soul, Shakura S’Aida) on keyboards.
The ‘Toronto Sound’ was the term given to the music that rolled out of the bars on Yonge St. and cafes in Yorkville in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Led by bands like The Mandala, The Checkmates, The Hawks, David Clayton Thomas and the Shays, The Cougars, the Downchild Blues Band and The Majestics, later evolving into Dr. Music, Bush, Motherlode and Rhinoceros.
“This will be a night to remember and the first time that we’ve partnered with an external organization on a concert. We are so grateful for the Downtown Yonge BIA’s support on this project.  We can’t wait to see it all come together on our stage,’ said Krista Storey, manager of arts and culture, Town of Gravenhurst.
