Sign By-Law

Gravenhurst has been undertaking the creation of a sign by-law.  Council has made some request for changes and a new draft has been written. The points below are some of the major changes in this draft:

  • Further definition for illuminated signs, special event signs and menu boards including defining internal illumination, external illumination and flashing illumination separately.
  • Electronic signs will be permitted in certain locations with enhanced regulations excluding the Business Improvement Area.
  • Clarifying the purpose and historical value of cottage associations signs and ensuring they remain permitted
  • Inclusion of accessibility references
  • Removal of clauses relating to grandfathering
  • Third Party Signs are not permitted on residential, excluding rural zoned lands over 10 acres.

A public meeting will be held in the Gravenhurst Council Chambers at Noon on October 17th.  For those that can attend there will be the opportunity to voice concerns or support of the project.  If you can’t attend the meeting please go to or email with your comments.
