Annual Recruiting Efforts Now Underway
GRAVENHURST, ON – The Gravenhurst Fire Department is kicking off its annual recruiting efforts, looking to recruit new volunteer firefighters to help fill its ranks.
“As the weather warms, we usually begin our focused recruiting efforts to entice local residents to step forward and ‘Answer the Call’ as the saying goes,” says Fire Chief Larry Brassard. “Currently, we have a need to add five firefighters at our station in town, four at our Kilworthy station, and as many as possible at our Barkway station,” he added. The Barkway station is particularly in need of firefighters as the department hasn’t received a new application for that station in the past couple of years.
“This is a situation that many volunteer based departments in North America are grappling with,” said Brassard who points to recent media coverage of the issue confronting areas such as the Lake of Bays and Vankoughnet areas of Muskoka.  A postcard in the Gravenhurst Fire Station says it all; it shows a photo of a lone firefighter walking away from a fire truck with a caption that reads ‘What if volunteer firefighters didn’t volunteer?”
The department is appealing to men and women over the age of 18 who are in good physical condition to step forward. “We need all types of people to fill our rosters, but being team oriented and being willing and able to learn new skills is important.” The department provides full training, all protective equipment, uniforms and insurance coverage as well as the opportunity to serve the community in a real and tangible way. Applications can be downloaded from the Town’s website or picked up at the Gravenhurst main station during business hours or any station during the evening when training is occurring. “We really welcome people to come in and chat with our
firefighters about what being a volunteer firefighter is all about, it’s a fantastic way to serve,” he added.
