Tourism Development

Gravenhurst is the gateway for almost 2 million of Muskoka's annual visitors. Muskoka can be considered a "must see/must do" destination. The rejuvenating downtown has a number of redevelopment opportunities. The beautifully rejuvenated Muskoka Wharf offers outstanding waterfront activities, a restored fish habitat, boardwalk and hiking trails. It is also home to North America's oldest operating steamship and a museum dedicated to telling the story of our boat builders and boating heritage.

There are many traditional water-based and outdoor activities that visitors consider to be part of "cottage country". These include boat cruises, canoeing, hiking, strolling through historic downtowns and sightseeing at waterfalls. The physical setting is unique compared to nearby destinations, so, even though other destinations may offer many of the same experiences.

  • Leverage the existing arts, cultural, events and entertainment assets by creating packaged tourism products

  • Create shoulder season outdoor recreational adventure product - cycling, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, ice-fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, wind surfing, rock climbing, and others.
  • Create shoulder season "signature" festival to attract visitors from beyond 40 km radius of Gravenhurst.
