Fire Chief Message

Gravenhurst Fire Chief Larry BrassardWelcome to the Gravenhurst Fire Department's web pages! We are happy to be able to share a brief overview of the workings of our department and the services we offer.

Our staff are dedicated to the protection of our community and while we try to provide cost effective fire protection services, the sad truth is when an emergency occurs much of the damage is already done, the injuries have occurred and in the worst cases, the fatalities have occurred before we are even called into action.  For this reason, fire prevention and emergency response are the foundation of our services.

Prevention programs include public education, fire safety inspections, Fire Code enforcement, emergency planning and new building plans examination.  The public education programs provide people of all ages with information on how to protect themselves, their homes, families, co-workers and our community.  Learn Not To Burn, Older and Wiser, and TAPP-C are some of the programs used by our prevention staff.  We also provide training in the use of portable fire extinguishers, preparing and maintaining emergency plans and on many other safety topics.

Emergency response services include fire suppression, vehicle extrication, water and ice rescue, the initial response to hazardous materials incidents and emergency incident management. Gravenhurst relies on part-time or "volunteer" firefighters for much of our service delivery; however, four full-time staff assist with the training, prevention and administrative roles that are so necessary today.

Our part-time firefighters are well trained and dedicated to serving you. They are your neighbours. They are nurses, mechanics, carpenters, electricians, boat builders, business owners, homemakers and truck drivers. They are committed to protecting our community - our strength is in our people. If you have ever considered becoming a member of our department, I would encourage you to look at our recruiting section, learn all you can about what we do and come and talk with us - we are always looking to strengthen our team. Do you have what it takes?

Lastly, I ask you to make a personal commitment to the safety of your family. Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and talk with your family about what to do if there is a fire or other emergency in your home. Be as prepared as you expect your firefighters to be.

Sincerely,

Larry Brassard
