Forest Fire Prevention

If you live in or near a forested area, you are living in what is often called the wildland urban interface and you may have to deal with the threat of a wildfire.  Prevention is the best protection against loss, damage or injury from wildfire.  There are things that you can do to reduce the risk of loss or damage to your property in a wildfire.

FireSmart is a program from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources that is used across North America.  It provides information to help communities and homeowners take action and protect their properties and surrounding natural resources from the risk of wildfire.  Visit the FireSmart website for further information on forest fire prevention.

What and When Can I Burn

Ontario averages over 1300 wildfires each year from Georgian Bay to Hudson’s Bay and about one half of these are started by people.  Please review the Town of Gravenhurst burning control by-law for safe burning practices and view our Forest Fire Danger Rating page for the current forest fire danger rating.
