Gravenhurst Fire Truck

Public Education

Our focus is to prevent fires from happening in the first place. We do this through public education. Our hope is that by discussing fire safe behavior we can change people’s everyday habits to include fire safety in everything they do.

Public Education Division

The Public Education Division tries to reach all citizens of the community and provide them with helpful information and training. Information on smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers are available. The Fire Prevention Division is also available to speak directly to residents as guest speakers at functions, displays at community events, visits to the local schools and through the Alarmed for Life smoke detector campaign.

Public Education Programs

The programs used in educating the public in Gravenhurst are the same programs used by fire departments across North America and include:

  • After the Fire – A program that provides victims of a fire with the necessary information to help rebuild their lives.
  • Exit Drills in the Home – A program that teaches children and adults to plan for a fire in their home by making and practicing a home escape plan.
  • Learn Not to Burn – A series of 22 fire safe behaviours taught to local school children as part of their regular school studies.
  • Alarmed for Life – An campaign to put a smoke detector in every home in the community. Any resident who is unable to buy or install a smoke detector will be given one upon request. If the homeowner asks, a fire fighter will go to their home and help install the detector in the best location.
  • Older & Wiser – An educational program designed to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries to older adult residents. Fire fighters will speak to any group of adults on fire safety in the home.
  • TAPP-C – A program, also known as The Arson Prevention Program for Children, designed to reach out to younger residents who may be showing unsafe fire behavior.
