FIRE FAMILY CELEBRATES NEWEST ADDITIONS and PROMOTIONS

Gravenhurst, ON - The Terry Fox auditorium was full of the sounds of bagpipes and family last Thursday night as the Gravenhurst Fire Department welcomed new members, and celebrated one retirement and several promotions within its ranks.

Almost 100 family members and guests watched as nine recruit firefighters who had just completed a year long rigorous training program, exchanged their yellow helmets for the black helmets of a regular firefighter. As is tradition, the helmets were presented by the department along with graduation diplomas with one exception. Firefighter Alisha Dawes was presented with her helmet by her father, a retired fire Chief from Burford. The new firefighters then stood together and we’re administered their oath of service by Reverend Dr. Jim Sitler, the departments chaplain.

In keeping with the family theme of the event, newly promoted officers were presented and “pinned” with their new badges by their wives.  Captain  Chris Tryon, who retired from the department with 19 years of service was also presented with his helmet and a plaque by Deputy Chief Todd Clapp, while several other members of the department were given service pins in recognition of 5 and 15 years of service.

Deputy Mayor Jeff Watson, himself a retired Gravenhurst firefighter, brought greetings on behalf of the Mayor and Council, and cautioned about the many family events that the firefighters will miss in the future while serving the residents of Gravenhurst, underscoring the importance of family support to the work the firefighters do.

Glen Davies, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town also urged the new firefighters to rely on one another, to remain ready for service always, and to reach out to one another for strength.

The event was also attended by Town Councillors Erin Eiter and Heidi Lorenz, senior Town staff and several retired and many active firefighters, and capped off by a reception that followed the ceremony.
