83rd Summer Season is a Celebration of Canada at Opera House
Gravenhurst, ON - O Canada, our home and native land!  The Gravenhurst Opera House is excited to present its 83rd season of summer theatre in Muskoka, and this year very proud to showcase some of Canada’s best to celebrate 150!
This summer theatre season features a new generation of Canadian contemporary playwrights, as well, honours our history with two brilliant musical pioneers who helped build our vibrant entertainment industry, Muskoka summer residents, and Officers of the Order of Canada, Alan Lund and Howard Cable.  “What better way to celebrate our country’s 150th, than to honour our great Canadian talent with close to 100 theatre performances and concerts all summer long.’” said Krista Storey, manager arts and culture.
On the heels of his second stint choreographing Canada’s Juno Awards, Dave Campbell, summer theatre artistic director at the Gravenhurst Opera House, promises a season you won’t soon forget.  “We are fortunate to be able to put some of Canada’s top talent on our stage, and this season celebrate the creators of Canadian performances,” stated Campbell.
Kevin Riordon’s writing in ‘Old Wives’ Tales’ (June 13 to July 14) is the essence of what you would like to say, but can’t. Swing! (July 19 - August 25) is the brain child of Alan Lund, ‘Canada’s Fred Astaire’, who along with Canadian legend, big band man, Howard Cable were early pioneers of Canadian tours, glamorous musicals and CBC television.  “We have an exceptional cast, three of which come to us directly from the National tour of Saturday Night Fever.  They are accompanied on stage by a live swing band,” notes Campbell.  This is the Opera House’s largest and most lavish show to date, and was first performed at the Charlottetown Festival in 1984.  “To breathe a fresh new Canadian joy into ‘Swing’ we’ve brought back veteran director Caroline Smith, who worked with Alan and Howard on many productions in Charlottetown.  This is a ‘do not miss’ event,” said Campbell.
Closing out the season is the Canadian classic, ‘Sexy Laundry’ (Sept. 12 - Sept. 29), by Michel Riml.  Anyone who has ever been married or in a relationship will love this romantic comedy.  It stars two return favourites, Debbie Collins and Brian Paul.
In addition to three great performances, there is an amazing line-up of concerts, including The Summer Kick-Off Gala, May 26, Whiskey Jack, June 9, Arrogant Worms, musical comedy troupe, June 30, Soulsville - The Music of Stax Records, featuring All Canadian, award winning musical artists on August 26, Happy Birthday Canada, from Jack Hutton and Friends on September 2, and finally the Summer Season Wrap Up Concert featuring ‘The Great Canadian Songbook’ with Tom Barlow and Johnny Max, September 30th.
Come to laugh, come to cry, and of course feel free to dance in the aisles! From directors and designers to actors and musicians, some of Canada’s brightest talent will be in town this summer, and you won’t want to miss the party.
