 WHAT IS A SIGN BY-LAW?

Sign by-laws are a legal way for a municipality to regulate the erection, display, alteration , repair and removal of signs.  These by-laws are very diverse from Municipality to Municipality.  

 THE NEED FOR A SIGN BY-LAW

In December 2016, Gravenhurst Town Council passed a resolution directing staff to develop a sign by-law to address a number of concerns.  Some reasons for a sign by-law include:
  • Safety 
  • Maintenance and preservation of the unique features of City streetscapes
  • To avoid sign pollution
  • Consistent Town Signage

 THE PROCESS

  

  1. December, 2015 - Staff was directed by council to begin researching a potential sign by-law for the Town of Gravenhurst
  2. January-May, 2016 - Staff looked at the structure and content of other municipalities to determine best practices.
  3. May, 2016 - A working session was held with council to get initial opinions on the scope and structure of the by-law
  4. June, 2016 - A survey was created for council and the public in order to get an understanding to the feelings of the community.
  5. April 20, 2017 - A Public Meeting will be held for input into the Draft Sign Bylaw
  6. October 17, 2017 - PUBLIC MEETING, Gravenhurst Council Chambers 12:00 PM 
  7. October 24, 2017 - Sign-by-law passed by Council.
