Sign By-Law

WHAT IS A SIGN BY-LAW?

Sign by-laws are a legal way for a municipality to regulate the erection, display, alteration , repair and removal of signs.  These by-laws are very diverse from Municipality to Municipality.

WHY ARE WE CREATING A SIGN BY-LAW?

In December, Gravenhurst Town Council passed a resolution directing staff to develop a sign by-law to address a number of concerns.  Some reasons for a sign by-law include:

  • Safety
  • Maintenance and preservation of the unique features of City streetscapes
  • To avoid sign pollution
  • Consistent Town Signage

 HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Staff are looking for your input.  Sign By-laws have the potential to be larger documents.  There are a number of ways for you to get involved.

  • Monitor the Town's website for updates;
  • Follow us on Twitter or Facebook for the most current reports and community engagement opportunities;
  • Pick up your copy of the Gravenhurst Banner or observe their website for updates and notification of future public meetings;
  • Attend and share your ideas, questions, or comments at upcoming community engagement events;
  • Participate in online surveys available on the Town website; Find it here
  • Review and provide input on reports which will be made available online and at the Town office; or
  • Contact the Economic Development Department via email, fax, mail, or set up a meeting to provide your input

 WHERE ARE WE IN THE PROCESS?

The sign by-law is at the beginning of the process.  We are currently looking for community input on the scope and structure of the proposed by-law.

  1. December, 2015 - Staff was directed by council to begin researching a potential sign by-law for the Town of Gravenhurst
  2. January-May, 2016 - Staff looked at the structure and content of other municipalities to determine best practices.
  3. May, 2016 - A working session was held with council to get initial opinions on the scope and structure of the by-law
  4. June, 2016 - A survey was created for council and the public in order to get an understanding to the feelings of the community.

Thank you very much for your continued interest!
