Civil Marriage Information

Marriage licenses may be obtained through the Legislative Services Department and licenses when issued are good anywhere in Ontario for ninety (90) days from issue.

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

Identification

Two pieces of original identification for both applicants must be presented and must confirm name, birth date and include a signature.  One piece of ID from each column below must be provided:

Valid Photo ID

  • Birth Certificate

  • Valid Passport

  • Record of Immigrant Landing

  • Canadian Citizenship Card

  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Valid Passport

  • Ontario Photo Card

  • Ontario Health Card (with photo)

  • Valid Passport (cannot be used for both categories)

If an Applicant has been Divorced

In Canada - an original Certificate of Divorce must be presented (original signature and seal)

Outside Canada - approval is required from the Office of the Registrar General.

$145.00 (cash or debit) ** Please note that the fee increases January 1st each year by the inflationary rate.

Civil Marriages

The Town of Gravenhurst has Wedding Commissioners available to perform civil marriage ceremonies for those who are looking to keep things simple. The Wedding Commissioners are appointed by the Clerk and are required to perform ceremonies under the guidelines and procedures that have been approved.  Ceremonies may be held anywhere in Gravenhurst subject to the approval of the Director of Legislative Services / Clerk.  Ceremonies held at the Municipal Office are subject to space availability. 

Booking a Civil Marriage Ceremony

All bookings are done through the Municipal Office. 

A mandatory pre-ceremony meeting with both applicants is required to be held with the Wedding Commissioner no less than one week in advance of the ceremony.

Fees - $325.00 (does not include marriage license application fee or additional meeting requirements) payable in advance of the pre-ceremony meeting.  Cancellation fees apply.
