Timelines for Building Permit

To submit a complete permit application, make sure you have the following :

  • Application Form  (property owner or agent will submit an application for the proposed construction or demolition)
  • Authorization Form for agent, if applicable.
  • Building Permit Fee (cash, interact visa or cheque are accepted)
  • Schedule 1 Designer Information Form if applicable.
  • All applicable drawings (requirements differ depending on proposed work and class of building)

Timelines

Within the time period set out in Table Division C 1.3.1.3 the CBO shall:

  • Issue the permit,
  • Refuse to issue the permit and provide in writing all of the reasons for the refusal.
  • Note: timelines do not apply to incomplete applications

The building permit is valid for 1 year from the date issued. Work must begin with 6 months.

  1. A detached house, semi-detached house, townhouse, or row house where no dwelling unit is located above another dwelling unit.
  2. A detached structure that serves a building described in Clause (a) and does not exceed 55m² (592 ft²) in building area.
  3. A tent to which OBC Div. B 3.14 applies.
  4. A sign to which OBC Div. B 3.15 applies.

  1. Buildings of 3 or fewer storeys in building height, having a building area not exceeding 600m² (6,458 ft²), and classified as Group C, Group D, Group E, or Group F: Div. 2 and 3 - other than buildings described in Column 2 of any Rows 1 and 4 of this Table.
  2. Farm buildings that do not exceed 600m² (6,458 ft²) in building area.

  1. Buildings used for major occupancies classified as Group A, Group B, Group F: Div. 1, or buildings exceeding 600m²
  2. (6,458 ft²) or 3 storeys in building height and used for major occupancies classified as Group C, Group D, Group E, Group F: Div. 2 and 3 - other than buildings described in Column 2 of any Rows 1 and 4 of this Table.
  3. Farm buildings exceeding 600m² (6,458 ft²) in building area.

  1. Post-disaster buildings.
  2. Building classified as high buildings (OBC Div. B 3.2.6.) or any provision in OBC Div. B 3.2.8.3. to 3.2.8.11. applies.
