Train Station Consultation in the Works

Town Interested in Gaging the Pulse of the Community

Gravenhurst, ON – The Town of Gravenhurst wants to ensure residents that the future of the Gravenhurst Train Station will be thoroughly examined and that an opportunity to voice concerns and provide suggestions are in the works.

“First and foremost we want to let the community know that the Gravenhurst Train Station won’t be going anywhere. This Train Station is a designated historic building in our community and a number of features and attributes of the building have significant heritage significance and are protected. Secondly, we want to reassure the community that their opinions are vitally important and that we will be reaching out to them to get their feelings on what Council should ultimately do with the property,” said Mayor Paul Kelly.

The discussion over the Train Station was raised during the recent Committee of the Whole meeting held on Tuesday November 19. Council reviewed a number of recommendations presented by Staff, following a Request for Proposal that went out to the community in the fall that sought options to fill the current vacancy at the Train Station, a property that is currently owned and maintained by the Town.

“Council has decided that they want to explore all options on the table and perhaps look at some new ideas,” said Mayor Kelly. We want to act in the most responsible manner and represent the best interests of the tax payer.

Opening up the property to private business ownership may be an option the community is open to exploring.  We look forward to further engagement,” he said.

Over the course of the next five years, Council heard that the Train Station would require significant upkeep and maintenance to be sustained. Unit 1 of the Train Station has been vacant since the summer.  Engagement opportunities and approach are currently being determined, further updates will be shared by the Town as they become available.
