May 15, 2020

Gravenhurst, ON – The Victoria Day holiday weekend is upon us and the Town of Gravenhurst continues to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, reminding everyone of the Provincial Orders that remain in place as Phase One of the re-opening plan is set to begin on Tuesday May 19th, as announced by Premier Doug Ford on Thursday May 14th.

Today, the Province announced the lifting of the Restricted Fire Zone Fire Ban in Ontario which has included the Town of Gravenhurst. Effective at midnight on Saturday May 16, open air burning returns to being regulated by the local By-law Division. Residents are reminded that the local open air burning by-law prohibits daytime burning and places restrictions on the size and conditions that accompany open air burning. Please refer to the Town’s Open Air Burning By-law Online. Enjoy your holiday weekend, but please keep safety at top of mind.

“The way that our community has responded to the Provincial Orders has made a real difference how things have turned out in Gravenhurst,” said Mayor Paul Kelly. “I want to continue to recognize the incredible efforts of our essential workforce, frontline workers, first responders and healthcare professionals. It’s amazing to see how our community is working together in some way, shape, or form to help keep each other safe. We are continuing to see parts of Gravenhurst and Muskoka re-open, however we don’t want to move too fast because this too could turn around just as quickly. It is imperative that we work hard to encourage people to shop locally. Now more than ever, our businesses need your support,” said the Mayor.

In addition to the re-open plan announcement this week, the Province extended the state of emergency until June 2nd. The Town continues to provide services as best as possible, under the current circumstance, and are actively preparing plans to address both internal and external operations as restrictions are gradually eased.  At the recent Committee of the Whole meeting on May 12th, further changes were made to the 2020 interim taxes, which were originally due March 31st. The changes will further remove any penalties and interest charges on non-payments of 2020 interim taxes until July 31st. Further property tax and financial information can be found on the Town’s website.

As a reminder, the Town of Gravenhurst will be closed on Monday May 18th, to celebrate Victoria Day. Summer hours begin Tuesday May 19th, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Staff will be available to serve you, however, all Town facilities remain closed to the public until further notice.
