Gravenhurst Continues to Monitor COVID-19 Situation Closely

Gravenhurst, ON – The Town of Gravenhurst continues to review services and implement measures necessary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this week several additional spring and summer programs were cancelled. The Town will continue to advise and provide updates on the status of additional programs and services should they be modified or otherwise cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Physical distancing continues to be the best method to help flatten the curve of infection rates associated with the pandemic. “With Easter weekend approaching it’s important that extended family gatherings not take place. There are many alternatives to interact with each other while not physically being in the same room,” said Mayor Paul Kelly. “These are unusual times and it’s very important that everyone continues to take the advice of health officials and stay home,” he added.

The OPP will be conducting enforcement of Provincial restrictions of gatherings greater than five people and physical distancing. While education, awareness and compliance are preferred options, OPP officers will apply discretion and may lay charges under the provincial Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA), if restrictions are not being adhered to.

All facilities in Gravenhurst remain closed to public access until further notice. Some Town services have been altered, but remain available. Gravenhurst Municipal boat launches, docks and wharf areas continue to remain open to the public at this time. It is acknowledged that this may change pending further Provincial direction.

Additionally, the provincial list of “essential services” is continually being modified. The most recent changes include significant limitations to the construction industry, and as a result, the Town’s ability to issue permits and conduct inspections.  The Province has detailed what types of construction can and cannot occur, and this has been communicated to the local construction industry.  Specifically, as of 11:59 pm April 4th, 2020 construction sites across Ontario shall be limited to the following parameters:

  • Construction projects and services associated with the healthcare sector, including new facilities, expansions, renovations and conversion of spaces that could be repurposed for health care space.
  • Construction projects and services required to ensure safe and reliable operations of, or to provide new capacity in, critical provincial infrastructure, including transit, transportation, energy and justice sectors beyond the day-to-day maintenance.
  • Critical industrial construction activities required for,
    • the maintenance and operations of petrochemical plants and refineries,
    • significant industrial petrochemical projects where preliminary work has already commenced,
    • industrial construction and modifications to existing industrial structures limited solely to work necessary for the production, maintenance, and/or enhancement of Personal Protective Equipment, medical devices (such as ventilators), and other identified products directly related to combatting the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Residential construction projects where
    • a footing permit has been granted for single family, semi-detached and townhomes
    • an above grade structural permit has been granted for condominiums, mixed use and other buildings, or
    • the project involves renovations to residential properties and construction work was started before April 4, 2020.
  • Construction and maintenance activities necessary to temporarily close construction sites that have paused or are not active and to ensure ongoing public safety.

The Province has detailed what types of construction can and cannot occur.  For up to date information on these, and other restrictions, please visit www.covid-19.ontario.ca

Please have a safe and happy Easter! While Town functions will be closed Friday April 10 to Tuesday April 14 to observe Easter, we will continue to monitor the situation and follow up with community business and concerns upon our return.
