Gravenhurst Archives Invites The Public to Share in Rich History
Six Upcoming Talks to Explore Various Historical Moments in Gravenhurst
Gravenhurst, ON - The Gravenhurst Archives invites the public to join them as they continue their local history talks at the Gravenhurst Public Library with six scheduled talks. The series kicks off with the very popular Prisoner of War Camp 20 talk on Wednesday January 16th at 7 pm.
“The Gravenhurst Archives and Gravenhurst Public Library are excited to offer local history presentations once again for the community.  The talks that we had last year were very popular and we wanted to continue to share the community’s history,” said Julia Reinhart, Chief Librarian.  “This year the Archives have chosen some interesting topics that Judy Humphries, chair of the Archives, has completed in depth research about. She is excited to share this local history with everyone who attends.  We are also fortunate enough that Judy has decided to do an encore presentation of POW Camp 20: Nazi Officers Invade Gravenhurst on Wednesday January 16, to begin this year’s series.  This was a very popular presentation last year, we are thrilled to be able to offer it again,” said Reinhart.
“The POW Camp 20 held over 450 Nazi officers from June 1940 to June 1946 when it closed. Their presence was felt in every aspect of Gravenhurst life and the impact of this ‘invasion’ was far-reaching,” said Humphries who will explore how the community coped with the enemy in our midst during that time.
The following Wednesday evenings will feature these historical illustrated presentations;
February 13 - A Cold Wet Harvest: Harvesting Ice in Gravenhurst
April 10 - Are We There Yet? Getting to Gravenhurst 1865 – 1965
July 10 - What Didn’t Kill You only Made You Stronger: Gravenhurst fights Influenza, Diphtheria, Tuberculosis & Polio
September 18 - Read’n Writn’ and ‘Rithmetic: Our one room schools and how they grew
November 6 - Gravenhurst Goes to the Great War: The Impact of War on Our Town & Our People
Each ‘free’ talk begins at 7:00 PM in the Library Meeting Room and will be approximately 45 minutes plus time for questions.  For more information on these talks, please contact the Library at 705-687-3382 or visit
