It is no surprise that Gravenhurst has long been a hub for tourism. While, the Town has been involved in a number of regional plans and various local level assessments and engagement activity, there has not been a municipally specific plan since 1992. With that in mind and a clear indication of the importance of tourism, a process was set in motion to create a Tourism Destination Plan for Gravenhurst, a process was put into place to create a comprehensive Tourism Plan.
In order to do the vast engagement that was required as part of the development of this Plan, a dedicated resource was required and hired through grant funding from FedNor’s Youth Intern Program. This staff member was ultimately responsible for running the engagement and the Plan development process.
The Tourism Destination Plan was developed through 2019 and the beginning of 2020 prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic and was originally intended to be brought forward to Council in March of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of this sector locally and shown the need for a Plan, as a result, adjustments to the Plan reflect anticipated new realities post-pandemic. The adjustments to this Plan reflect a strategy for tourism recovery, which will be key in overall economic recovery.
The plan features 6 key goals, supporting a variety of sector activities and driven by 6 demand generators for the area.
