2024 Ontario Heritage Conference

Welcome to the 2024 Ontario Heritage Conference!

Slip on your flip flops, slap on some bug spray and kick back Muskoka style!

Welcome to Gravenhurst, the Gateway to Muskoka and the gateway to making conference memories!

We are thrilled to welcome you to our corner of Muskoka and hope that you leave this conference and your time with us feeling inspired, invigorated and invested in the future of heritage in your own community.

Our goal for the conference is to present an itinerary of educational and entertaining sessions that help feed the spark of heritage enthusiasm in each of our delegates. We aim to provide a different flavour of conference and hope that you enjoy the efforts and offerings of our committee.

Your organizing committee consists of passionate, dedicated and slightly 'off beat' heritage lovers, promoters and preservationists. This blend of eclectic souls includes Town of Gravenhurst Councillor & Deputy Mayor Randy Jorgensen, Chair of the Municipal Heritage Committee Michael Wayling, Senior Planner Angela Ghikadis, Community Champion Carole-Ann Simpson and Manager of Economic Development Amy Taylor.

We hope you enjoy this conference and invite you to explore Gravenhurst and Muskoka before or after your sessions to see why we are shameless promoters of our natural beauty, welcoming communities, rich heritage and cultural assets.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge the First Peoples, who, for thousands of years before us, were and still are the keepers and caretakers of this land where we now live and work; in particular the Chippewas of Rama, Wahta Mohawk First Nations and the Moon River Metis. We are dedicated to honouring Indigenous history and culture and committed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation and respect with all First Nation, Métis and Inuit people. We recognize all the generations of Indigenous people and their historic connection to this place and we are grateful for the opportunity to gather here at this time.

Gravenhurst is located at the south end of Lake Muskoka, 170 km north of Toronto. Before being officially incorporated the community was also known as McCabe's Landing after James McCabe and his wife, who settled in the area, and led guiding expeditions on Lake Muskoka. In the 19th century, Gravenhurst was home to numerous lumber operations and was known affectionately as Sawdust City as it was the epicenter of the lumber industry in Muskoka. As the logging industry began to decline, the tourism industry started to see a growth with more and more people flocking to the area to see the newly discovered wilderness.  Being the first incorporated Town in Muskoka and the southernmost large settlement, Gravenhurst became known as the "Gateway to Muskoka Lakes" and in honour of this moniker, built a welcoming arch on the main road into town. Over the years, this arch changed shape, size, and composition; however, it still stands today welcoming one and all to our community.
