History

Music on The Barge, Gull Lake, Gravenhurst

The roots of this treasured, 70 year old musical tradition, started prior to 1949 at the bandshell that once stood in Gull Lake Park. In 1949, the Civic Music Association had the foresight to moor some floating barges to the shore to act as a stage for local and visiting bands to play.  The shore provided the seating and the picturesque location provided a perfect Muskoka backdrop.

Thanks to the ongoing support of Mayor Wanda Miller during the 1950’s, by 1958, the attraction had become an institution. This led to the proposal of a fixed, above the water stage designed by Stan White Jr. which was completed by the following year.

The official ribbon cutting on July 4th 1959 took place with much pomp and circumstance with none other than Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in attendance.  They made this very special stop in Gravenhurst during their tour of Ontario and set Gravenhurst on firm moorings for what then became ‘Music On The Barge’.

In 1978, a local resident by the name of Fred Schulz took charge of collections for the Civic Music Association and in 1985 he became the Chairman of the organization.  40 years after first becoming involved, Fred continues to be the programmer, coordinator and your host for the Music on the Barge concert series.

Now owned and operated by the Town of Gravenhurst, this long cherished, Sunday night tradition continues to offer a wide variety of music for all ages in the beautiful Muskoka setting of Gull Lake Rotary Park.

We kick off our 70th Season with Little Peter & The Elegants, an 8-Piece 50's & 60's Rock 'n Roll Band! "Little Peter and the Elegants made its debut in 1973 at the Port Credit Secondary School Christmas assembly. They performed I Wonder Why, Yakety Yak and Rock Around the Clock. The audience asked for an encore but they didn’t know a 4th song! In 1974, Happy Days made its debut on television and LP&E played two school dances and a concert.

The band re-united with the original members for the 70th Reunion at PCSS in 1990 and again in 1995 with most of the original members. Today, Peter Toller is the only original member, and considers it a privilege to have such fine musicians in the band today!"

Members Include: Peter Toller (vocals), Brandon Rozen (vocals), Andreas Hackner (vocals), Doug Stone (bass & vocals), Jim Wood (guitar), James Racz (drums & vocals), Chris Robinson (saxophone & vocals), Richard Uglow (keyboards & vocals).

Green River: Creedence Clearwater Revival Tribute

Sunday, July 14th • 7:30 PM

Green River - The #1 Nationally Touring Creedence Clearwater Revival/John Fogerty Tribute Show is the brain child of native New Yorker Rick Horvath. Noodles as he is affectionately known, was born to perform this music. He started singing CCR songs in his very first band when he was only 13 years old.

CCR was an American rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their musical style encompassed the roots rock and swamp rock genres. Creedence Clearwater Revival's music is still a staple of American radio airplay and the band has sold 30 million albums in the United States alone.

The show is very faithful to a live CCR performance. Listeners enjoy a full 90 minute show of their favorite CCR classics (Bad Moon Rising, Proud Mary, Up Around the Bend to name a few) and songs that Creedence would turn into live jams such as Born on the Bayou and Susie Q. The band also mixes in John Fogerty classics including The Old Man Down the Road and Centerfield capturing the energy of his current show.
