Toronto’s Chandler Levack’s feature debut film I Like Movies is a smart, funny, touching, and empathetic look at a film- and self-obsessed teenaged curmudgeon pursuing his dreams and living in the wilds of early-2000s Burlington, Ontario. He’s the kind of guy who, when he buys a movie ticket, mentions the director’s name just to show that he’s there for the right reasons. He dreams of attending New York University. As infuriating as Lawrence can be, the film sticks with him as he bounces from one small but impactful disaster to the next. We find ourselves rooting for him — not to realize his fantasies, but to engage with his reality.

This performance takes place at the Trinity United Church located at 290 Muskoka Rd. N.
Joe Trio is not your average piano trio. They don't want to be neatly categorized, but instead strive for diversity, versatility, and more than a little humour and unpredictability. Their repertoire consists of the classics – from Papa Haydn to Uncle Shostakovich, new works by contemporary composers, and their own arrangements of popular, jazz and rock tunes. And they're not afraid to mix together so many styles of music into a single piece it makes your head spin. More than virtuosi, the Trio's members are fantastic performers who engage the audience in a way few classical musicians can. Amply witty, charming, and tremendously musical, Joe Trio leaves audiences with a new appreciation for classical music.
Since Joe Trio was formed in 1989, this classically trained violin-cello-piano threesome has presented hundreds of concerts throughout Canada and the United States – ten provinces, one territory, and thirty-six states so far. They've played everywhere from Whitehorse to Corpus Christi, and from Sacramento to St. John's, and even in Ely, Nevada. Joe has been heard on National Public Radio in the United States, RTE Lyric FM in Ireland, and on many CBC Radio shows including the old Morningside show, Disc Drive, The Music Room, West Coast Performance, and Quirks and Quarks. As well as giving concerts, the Trio enjoys offering their services for education outreach programs, and has played many school shows for children of all ages.

Productions are adjudicated and given feedback over the course of the festival week and 3 productions are selected at the Regional level as Outstanding Productions to move on to the NTS Provincials to be held in May in Toronto. "In Praise of the Ostrich"
Friday, May 5, 2023
Doors open at 7:00 PM; Show begins at 7:30 PM
Tickets: $62.00 (includes fees & taxes)
With "In Praise of the Ostrich" Derek Edwards moseys back into town on horse-drawn comedy wagon; a searing meander down life's twisting trails, steered effortfully by this 30-year veteran. He returns with a payload of blissfully funny personal stories – a cacophony of shenanigans – set to tickle the ribs and warm the heart.
With an easy conversational style, Derek reluctantly pulls his head out of the sand and launches into commentary on the influx of pot stores, self-driving cars, gambling tips, the challenge of staying youthful...plus dressing warm.
From Vegas to St. John’s, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly his peers think so, as evidenced by the fact that he’s a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic - Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy. As Rick Mercer says, “Everyone knows Derek is the funniest man in Canada.” A Shantero production.

Jack Hutton & Friends
Friday, August 11, 2023
Doors open at 7:00 PM; Show begins at 7:30 PM
Tickets: $25 plus applicable fees & taxes
Jack Hutton and Friends, one of the most popular groups in the history of the Gravenhurst Opera House, is returning on Friday, August 11th, for the group’s last Farewell World Tour. That was the title of the group’s last concert in August, 2019, but the near-sell-out audience rose at the end and chanted “Stay!” until Jack returned to the microphone and promised one more concert. COVID intervened in the following summers, so Friday, August 11th, will be the return concert that Jack promised more than three years ago. The program will include vintage tunes from the 1920s and 1930s that audiences have loved in the past. There will be at least two opportunities for the audience to sing along, including Vera Lynn’s World War II hit song, "We’ll Meet Again". The evening will be an opportunity to help Jack celebrate his 90th birthday, a milestone which he finds difficult to believe. To recognize becoming an octogenarian, Jack has produced with the help of a musical friend, Darryl Hollingsworth, a DVD with recorded highlights of his playing over the years. That will include performing at a ragtime festival on the Mississippi River in 1983 with the Rainbow Gardens Jazz Orchestra and performing decades later at the Gravenhurst Opera House decades later with Jack Hutton and Friends. Brian Bauer, known as “Dr. Jazz” in Buffalo for many years, will be bringing his own microphone with Scall letters of a forgotten radio station, along with some of the world’s worst jokes. Will Wilson, who played with Jack in the Rainbow Gardens Jazz Orchestra, will also be on stage. He is one of the few banjo players, who has played Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with a classical orchestra. Ric Giorgi, the bass player for Jack Hutton and Friends, led the Rainbow Gardens Jazz Orchestra all through the 1980s and early 1990s.

“Stay calm and shanty on”
A lot has happened in the almost 10 years since Séan McCann exited the Canadian folk rock arena filling GREAT BIG SEA he co-founded in 1993. He’s released five successful solo albums touching on a range of subjects from Canadian life and culture to spotlighting national hardships like the infamous 2016 wildfires that devastated Fort McMurray, Alberta, in which he partnered with the Canadian Red Cross. A philanthropist as much as he is an artist, McCann also organized a songwriters’ benefit in 2017 in support of veterans suffering with PTSD and addiction. In recognition of these efforts and his other advocacy work for people living with mental health and addiction issues, McCann earned the Order of Canada in 2020 McCann has shared his powerful and inspiring personal story and songs with audiences all across North America over the past decade as a solo performer and musical keynote speaker. As the concert trail is opening up again as pandemic restrictions loosen, McCann continues to do what loves best, write and perform songs and share stories accompanied by his best friend “Old Brown” - the first guitar he purchased back in 1989.
