Muskoka Music Festival presents Whitehorse with special guest AHI

Saturday, August 20th, 2022
Doors open at 7:00 PM; Show begins at 7:30 PM
Tickets: $45.00 plus applicable fees & taxes

MUSKOKA MUSIC FESTIVAL presents the JUNO-award winning group WHITEHORSE as the headliner of the Muskoka Music Festival with special guest Polaris Music Prize long-listed artist AHI. Join us all weekend for the 2022 Muskoka Music Festival and Dockside Festival of the Arts. For more information please visit www.muskokamusicfestival.com. Presented by TD.

Since their debut, Whitehorse has traveled from magnetic folk duo to full-blown rock band and beyond. In truth Whitehorse is never fully either one or the other, but an ever-evolving creative partnership that challenges both artists, Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet, to explore new instrumental and lyrical terrain with each record. Steamy, swampy and squalling in equal measure, Whitehorse's signature sound is guitar-heavy, harmony-abundant and lyrically deft. Now, the JUNO Award winners return with Strike Me Down, a collection of disco-twirling, hard riffing tales from the brink and their second full-length release of 2021, following hot on the heels of Modern Love. Strike Me Down showcases Whitehorse's masterful, fantastical storytelling and melodic pop sensibilities, with plenty of space made for guitar shredding, epic basslines and spaced-out vocal layering. High-impact production and prismatic visuals contribute to Strike Me Down's high-stakes, epic vibe. Key single "Why So Cruel" synthesizes decades of dance-ready nightclub noir, from Blondie and ABBA to Kacey Musgraves' "High Horse." 2022 sees Whitehorse’s prolific streak continue with another full length album scheduled for release in I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying, as well as Volume 3 of the band’s popular The Northern South series of covers EPs. In addition to the band’s long-awaited return to live touring, with headline tours of North America and a host of high-profile summer festival appearances lined up, it promises to be another stellar year for Whitehorse.

AHI
Though much has been made of AHI’s years spent backpacking everywhere from the hills of Ethiopia to the jungles of Trinidad, Prospect, the globetrotting singer/songwriter’s extraordinary new album, is the story of an even more profound journey: an internal quest for understanding and self-discovery. Recorded in Nashville with GRAMMY-winning producer Paul Mabury, the collection is bold and expansive, delivering on the promise of AHI’s first two records with a captivating, immersive sound that showcases the raw power of his gravel-on-silk vocals like never before. The songs here are deeply introspective, looking inward with piercing insight and honesty, and the performances are similarly fearless, blurring the lines between roots, folk, pop, and soul as they grapple with pain and healing, faith and resilience, connection and identity. Born in Ontario, AHI (pronounced “eye”) grew up in a traditional West Indian family that considered music diversionary entertainment, but after dropping out of school to hike, meditate, and fast his way across the world, he set his mind to pursuing songwriting professionally. His debut album, We Made It Through The Wreckage, was a breakout hit, with lead single “Ol’ Sweet Day” racking up more than 14M streams and earning AHI an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. The attention helped him score a deal with Thirty Tigers for his next LP, 2018’s In Our Time, which garnered a JUNO nomination and led to dates with Patty Griffin, Michael Franti, and Lauren Daigle.

Spoons

Saturday, September 17, 2022
Doors open at 7:00 PM; Show begins at 7:30 PM
Tickets: $49.00 plus applicable fees & taxes

40 Years of Spoons! Formed in 1980, an intrepid young band from Burlington Ontario would soon make Spoons a different kind of household word. They would help define the sound of pop and New Wave in the 80s, with hits like Nova Heart, Romantic Traffic, Old Emotions and Tell No Lies. Their album Arias & Symphonies would go on to be named one of the 20 Most Influential Albums of The 80s by The Chart Magazine and their song "Nova Heart" was included in Bob Mersereau's book The Top 100 Canadian Singles of All Time. Not bad for a bunch of kids from Burlington, Ontario. Recently the Spoons celebrated their 40th anniversary with the release of two very special albums. Repeatable is a collection of all the hits and fan favourites from 1980-2020, available on CD and double vinyl. But the album Echoes, a collection of their songs re-recorded by artists from around the world (from England and Australia to the USA and Canada) is one of their proudest achievements. Whether stripped down or pushed to the limit, artists like Gowan, Alan Frew, When In Rome and Strange Advance cover Spoons songs in their own, undeniably personal and, sometimes very unexpected, way. The retro 80s movement shows no signs of slowing down. Not one bit. And as far as Sandy, Gord and a lot of fans are concerned, that is a very good thing indeed. Check out this live performance!

Brass Transit – a dynamic, crowd-pleasing, studio-tight powerhouse, and the world’s foremost Chicago tribute! An indication of the band’s authenticity and high-level musicianship: Chicago’s current ranks already include one longtime veteran of Brass Transit! Brass Transit was formed in 2008, its accomplished, award- winning roster intent on paying tribute to the decades-long, multiplatinum songbook of Chicago. Since 2008, Brass Transit has toured North America steadily, dazzling audiences with flawless performances and spectacular attention to detail. Hits like, Saturday In The Park, 25 or 6 To 4, If You Leave Me Now, Feelin’ Stronger Every Day and You’re The Inspiration have left crowds in awe, inspiring multiple standing ovations and comments like: “Spine-Tingling!” “Brought me back to my youth!” and “Perfect in every detail!” Brass Transit goes far beyond just replicating the songs; they embody the music. They recently produced their first (self-titled) album, taking songs by other top rock artists from the seventies and recording them with horns in the Chicago style. Sultans of String

Sunday, December 4, 2022
Doors open at 2:00 PM; Show begins at 2:30 PM
Tickets: $37.00 plus applicable fees & taxes

As winter crests and the mercury falls, everyone from your taxi driver to the music supervisor at the mall starts running timeless hits like "Jingle Bells" and "Silent Night." But for their Christmas Caravan show and album (which hit Billboard’s World Music Charts and the New York Times Hits List), Canada’s string wizards Sultans of String celebrate the holiday spirit with an adventurous musical trip around the world, featuring exuberant originals, world-music inspired classics, and seasonal favourites to warm your heart on a cold winter’s night.

Joining the Christmas Caravan this year is shimmering guest vocalist Rebecca Campbell.

From fiery fiddle tunes to a Caribbean sleigh ride, this surprising and delightful holiday fiesta heats up when Sultans of String bring their signature sound to well known gems such as Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, a Turkish twist on Greensleeves, Silent Night, as well as a django-jazz inspired Django Christmas, and a Rumba-Flamenca fuelled Jingle Bells.

Christmas Caravan show is also a special awareness raising bash for the UNHCR. As fundraising partners with UNHCR, the band has raised over $10,000 from their community awareness efforts and UNHCR’s ‘tip boxes’.

“Helping refugees is a cause we care about deeply because more than 67 million refugees worldwide are in desperate need of our support. They have every right to live a safe and dignified life as much as we do”, says Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient McKhool. “By supporting this show and partnership with the UNHCR, you are providing life-saving assistance to refugees all over the world.”

“Chris McKhool and the boys are fantastic!"
Bob Ezrin (Producer, Pink Floyd. Peter Gabriel)

"Perfect, joyful music performed by perfect musicians"
The WholeNote

“An amazing worldbeat Christmas where even the tried and true is taken to such new and amazing lengths. Very hot stuff clearly made to chase the cold winter away.”

Join Canadian tenor John McDermott and his special guests the award-winning DALA as they deliver holiday cheer and make a stop at Gravenhurst Opera House. As is John's tradition, he will sing holiday favourites, songs from his illustrious musical career, and tasteful Remembrance tributes.

Juno nominees and winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, DALA (Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine) write and sing in harmony that can best be described as angelic. These two best friends met in their high school music class in 2002 and have since released five albums and toured extensively across North America. Drawing upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Dala write songs that are both catchy and soulful. Amanda's ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila's velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become their trademark.

John is a Scottish-Canadian tenor who has released more than 40 albums over a 25+ year career. Starting in his parent's rec room singing for friends and family, he went on to record his first album, "Danny Boy", which went double platinum. Since then, John has toured extensively throughout Canada, the US, and internationally and his television specials have aired in Canada and the USA. Also known for his many charitable contributions and especially his work with veterans, John formed McDermott House Canada which donated $1.2 million to transform the Palliative Care Unit in K1E Veterans Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
