Classic Albums Live: Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here"

Saturday, April 27, 2024
Doors open at 6:45 PM; Show Starts at 7:30 PM
Tickets: $75.00 plus $10 surcharge

For tickets please visit Peter's Players

Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live takes the greatest albums and recreates them live on stage – note for note, cut for cut, using the best musicians. “Think of it as a recital,” says Martin, “these albums are historic and stand the test of time.” Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic Albums Live has found success in concentrating solely on the music. “We don’t dress up or wear any sort of costume. All of our energy is put into the music. We want the performance to sound exactly like the album,” says Martin. Craig Martin decided to cover “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd as it has sentimental meaning to him. He was 14 when the album came out in 1975, and he recalls having to take two buses to buy it. Back then he was liming baseball fields where he made pennies, so saving up for an album was a big deal. Craig made it down to Sams, only to find that the album was $4.99, not $3.99. He didn’t want the bus fare to be for nothing, so he stood there, admiring the album, knowing one day it would be his. Holding it up to the light, Craig remembers the blue see-through plastic the album was wrapped in, where underneath was the iconic shot of the two businessmen shaking hands. Craig returned to work, and over the next two weeks he managed to get an eye infection from the lime. After saving up enough, he got back on the two bus trip, and bought the album. As the years passed, the album came to mean a great deal to Craig. He finds that there’s something connecting about it, that we all star in our own movie as “Wish You Were Here” plays. Pink Floyd wrote the album as a tribute to their founding member, Syd Barrett, who had left the band seven years earlier due to his deteriorating mental health. As Classic Albums Live performs this album for you with clarity and cool, we will all be thinking of people in our lives we wish were here with us.

Doors open at 6:30 PM; Show begins at 7:00 PM
Tickets: $10 inclusive
This is a general admission performance - the seats are on a first come, first serve basis when you arrive at the theatre.

ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?

Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, ‘That’s Life’, tells his story that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he has carried for five decades. Starring Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter.

Jack Hutton & Friends

Friday, July 12, 2024
Doors open at 7:00 PM; Show Starts at 7:30 PM
Tickets: $25.00 plus applicable tax & fees

One of the most popular groups in the history of the Gravenhurst Opera House is returning on Friday, July 12, for what may be another sell-out for Jack Hutton and Friends. For the second year in a row, the evening will feature Ross Wooldridge, the best jazz clarinet player in Toronto and possibly all Canada. The Toronto musician leads a group which sounds like the jazz sextet that made Benny Goodman a world celebrity for decades. Ross Wooldridge is often referred to as Canada’s Benny Goodman. Also returning with Jack Hutton and Friends will be Will Wilson from Niagara-on-the-Lake who is equally at home on both guitar and banjo. He is one of the few banjo players in the world who has played with a symphony orchestra.

Ironically, the group’s last two concerts were both billed as the last time that Jack Hutton and Friends would be heard in public. At the end of the first farewell concert in 2019 the audience rose at the end and chanted “Stay”. Jack Hutton promised one more concert. Covid delayed another concert until last year when the promised concert in August was almost totally sold out. Afterwards within a few weeks the calls started with fans asking whether there would be one more concert. “I realized that the wonderful people who come to hear us are not just an audience. They have become our family. "

This year’s program promises to be an exciting one. It will include songs by Duke Ellington who played six times at Dunn’s Pavilion and two sing-alongs.

In his days since the Nylons, Micah has launched an active solo career, which included touring the USA with his international club hit “Welcome To My Head” - which placed #1 on the Billboard charts.
