Winter Activities

Winter is an amazing season in Gravenhurst with many outdoor activities to enjoy. As the lakes begin to freeze over and the snow begins to fall, there are some great activities for the whole family from skiing to skating, snowmobiling to ice fishing. Gravenhurst is a winter wonderland of events and home to the Gravenhurst Winter Carnival. We hope you enjoy the winter in Gravenhurst!

Hike, Ski, Snowshoe & Fatbike

Snowshoeing at Muskoka Bay ClubGravenhurst offers a great list of trails that can be used for skiing and snowshoeing. Be sure to check out the Trails page for more information on the length and difficulty of each trail.

Also make sure to visit Camping in Muskoka, home to Gravenhurst Nordic Trails - a network of 17km of groomed and track set cross-country ski trails with ski and snowshoe rentals available.  Follow @gravenhurst_nordic_trails on Instagram for up to date trail conditions and other important information. 

Head over to Taboo Muskoka Resort Thursday through Sunday to enjoy fat tire biking, snowshoeing, skating and more. You don't want to miss the guided nature hikes Fridays and Saturdays at 2pm and you're invited to warm and cozy bonfires Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 3 to 8pm at the Adventure Clubhouse. All activities are weather dependent on available on a first come first served basis. Some activities have additional costs.

Public Skating at Graeme Murray Arena

The following public skates take place at the Graeme Murray Arena in the Centennial Centre

  • Please Note: Cancellations May Occur 
  • Fee is $2 at the door

Weekend Public Skates 
Saturday & Sunday: 12 pm - 1 pm
September 9, 2023 to March 31, 2024

Adult Leisure Skate
Monday to Friday: 9 am - 10 am
September 5, 2023 to April 5, 2024

Parent & Tot Skate
Monday & Wednesday: 11:30 am - 1 pm
September 5, 2023 to April 3, 2024 

Please note the following posted information

All patrons who participate in ice skating programs must respect the following rules:

  • Follow all direction from Arena Operators and Town Staff 
  • Children 10 years of age and younger must be actively supervised by a responsible person 16 years of age or older. 
  • It is recommended that all skaters wear a CSA approved  helmet while on the ice. 
  • Only industry approved skate aides are permitted on the ice surface.

Prohibited Activities

  • No spitting or nasal expelling
  • No rough play, tag, racing, foul language or inappropriate behaviour
  • No carrying children while on the ice surface (including baby carriers)
  • No food or drink on the ice surface
  • No use of cell phones while on the ice
  • No shoes and/or strollers on the ice
  • No sitting on the boards
  • No hockey sticks/pucks are permitted during Public Skating times
  • Skate with the direction of all skaters
  • Please exit the ice surface promptly when buzzer rings

Snowmobiling

Three snowmobiles in the snow.Gravenhurst is home to hundreds of kilometers of groomed snowmobile trails. With the efforts of the Snowcrest Riders Snowmobile Club these trails are maintained and  marked for your safety.
Once the trails are open, snowmobiling is a great way to experience Gravenhurst and there are several operators willing to suit you up and take you out onto the trails.

Be safe when you sled: Stay on the trails, Dress appropriately, and most importantly don't drink and sled!
Remember to respect our landowners/private property owners and stay off all CLOSED trails. Any use of CLOSED trails without the landowner's permission is TRESPASSING and could result in trail permissions being revoked.

Mark your calendar for the Gravenhurst Winter Carnival!

Family Day Weekend, February 17th - 19th, 2023

This event has been taking place in Gravenhurst for more than 50 years and offers traditional events you don't want to miss such as a carnival dance, bed races, doggy dash, donut eating contests, nail driving contests, arm wrestling, a pancake breakfast & more.
