Fall in Muskoka: New interactive public art installation celebrates local creativity in downtown Gravenhurst

Fall in Muskoka

Fall has arrived in downtown Gravenhurst with a splash of colour and creativity.

The Town of Gravenhurst, in collaboration with the Gravenhurst BIA Review Steering Committee, is pleased to unveil Fall in Muskoka, a new interactive public art installation by local artist Hanna Dykstra, located in Heritage Square.

Designed to celebrate the beauty, wildlife and character of Muskoka in autumn, the installation invites residents and visitors of all ages to stop, explore, take photographs and discover a playful connection to the natural world.

Dykstra's colourful design features an imaginative collection of Muskoka-inspired imagery, including woodland creatures, trees and seasonal elements. Visitors are encouraged to stand alongside the artwork and capture a memorable Muskoka moment.

A Gravenhurst-based multidisciplinary artist and illustrator, Dykstra brings her distinctive artistic style and deep connection to the community to the project.

A small initiative with an impressive reach

The installation is the result of a public call for artists launched on Sept. 22 in collaboration with the Gravenhurst BIA Review Steering Committee.

With a 15-day submission period, the town received 22 artist submissions, attracting interest from across Muskoka, throughout Ontario and internationally, including New York and China.

Submissions represented a diverse range of creative disciplines, from emerging illustrators and graphic designers to established muralists and experienced public artists.

Following a jury review, Dykstra's proposal was selected for its vibrant visual character, interactive qualities and ability to engage audiences of all ages.

"This project demonstrates that even modest investments in arts and culture can create meaningful opportunities for artists, bring new energy to our public spaces and strengthen our sense of place," said Stoyan Barakov, manager of arts and culture services for the Town of Gravenhurst. "Receiving 22 submissions in just 15 days, including international interest, was incredibly encouraging. We're especially pleased to see a local Gravenhurst artist bring this creative vision to life."

Celebrating art, community and downtown Gravenhurst

The Fall in Muskoka installation is part of ongoing efforts to support creative placemaking, encourage community engagement and enhance the downtown experience for residents and visitors.

By combining public art with an interactive photo opportunity, the project encourages people to explore downtown Gravenhurst, celebrate the changing seasons and create lasting memories.

Residents and visitors are invited to visit Heritage Square, experience the artwork and share their photographs on social media using #ExperienceGravenhurst.
