Gravenhurst cameras are rolling…
The Town of Gravenhurst is reminding the public that municipal surveillance cameras are operational at various sites in the community.
The town uses cameras to deter criminal activity. When crime does occur in these spaces, recorded footage helps police identify suspects.
“Public safety and the protection of municipal assets is at the core of why we use surveillance cameras,” said Scott Lucas, chief administrative officer for the Town of Gravenhurst. “On multiple occasions we have been able to share footage with the Ontario Provincial Police, and this has helped with criminal investigations.”
The Town of Gravenhurst has used surveillance cameras for several years. Signs are on display at each site advising the public that cameras are operational.
Currently, cameras operate at the following locations:
- Town of Gravenhurst municipal office
- Gravenhurst Public Library
- Centennial Centre
- Muskoka Wharf
- Muskoka Wharf Sports Field
- Gravenhurst Lions Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial
- Gull Lake Rotary Park
- Gravenhurst Opera House
- Gravenhurst Fire Department stations
- Gravenhurst Public Works Building – Crawford Road
- Gravenhurst Parks Building – James Street
- Steamship Bay Road and Muskoka Road 169 intersection
- Town of Gravenhurst storage facility – Industrial Drive
Further investments in surveillance cameras will be made in the years ahead as new locations are determined.
“The OPP supports programs that can be shown to help prevent crime and victimization and/or improves public safety. The presence of surveillance cameras and access to footage is an important tool in police investigations and Bracebridge OPP appreciates the Town of Gravenhurst, both as a partner in crime prevention and in their commitment to improving public safety,” Insp. Wade Beebe said.
“Private citizens and businesses can become partners in community safety by enrolling in CAMSafe. CAMSafe is a program aimed at creating a database of private (residential and commercial) security cameras within communities that will act as a resource for police when investigating offences/crime. For more information, check out camsafe.ca,” the inspector said.
The public can report criminal activity at any time in our community by calling the OPP non-emergency number at 1-888-310-1122. In the case of emergency, dial 9-1-1.
Information can also be shared with Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477.
