National Drowning Prevention Week - July 19 to 25
The Town of Gravenhurst is observing National Drowning Prevention Week, which runs July 19 to 25.
Spearheaded by The Lifesaving Society, the theme for 2026 is ‘Prepare to be Water Smart.’ The aim is to teach Ontarians steps they can take to prevent drowning and water-related injury.
Key messages this year are drowning is preventable, preparation saves lives, and small steps can make a big difference.
This includes the following:
-
Always stay within arms reach/never swim alone
-
Always wear a live jacket
-
Learn to swim
-
Swim where there are lifeguards
-
Always supervise children when they are in the water.
More than 400 Canadians die in preventable water-related incidents each year.
Other safety tips to keep in mind include staying sober when around water and avoid boating alone.
In addition to swimming lessons, the society recommends taking lifesaving courses and other related courses to further develop water safety skills.
