Ontario Heritage Conference starts Thursday in Gravenhurst

The Town of Gravenhurst is delighted to host the Ontario Heritage Conference starting Thursday, June 13.

Almost 170 delegates will be in town for the three-day event with conference activities based at various locations throughout the community, including the Muskoka Discovery Centre, Gravenhurst Opera House, and the Residence Inn Gravenhurst Muskoka Wharf.

“On behalf of council and staff, I want to welcome delegates to our community,” Mayor Heidi Lorenz said. “We hope you have an enjoyable stay in Gravenhurst, a town that plays a proud part in the iconic story of Muskoka. Gravenhurst has a rich history intertwined with the natural beauty all around us. Have fun exploring and we hope you will consider a return visit in the future.”

Conference sessions will cover a variety of topics including storytelling through technology, heritage property ownership and restoration, and heritage tourism.

There will also be a historic walking tour of Muskoka Wharf, a tour of Bethune House, and tours of exhibits at the Muskoka Discovery Centre, plus a viewing of the film Lost Airmen of Muskoka.

“Our hope is that people leave the conference with a renewed passion for heritage in Ontario and a greater understanding of the vast and colourful history of Gravenhurst,” said Amy Taylor, the town’s manager of economic development and a member of the local committee that helped organize the conference.

Visitors to Gravenhurst play a significant role in supporting the local economy every year and Ontario Heritage Conference delegates are no exception. The town is providing each delegate with a $50 gift card that they can spend in town, helping to inject additional money into local businesses.
