VHS Converter
Gravenhurst Public Library has something for you to discover, and that is our VHS converter! Bring in your old home movies and give them new life by turning them into video files that you can watch from anywhere, any time.
Where do I go for this Service?
You will find our VHS converter upstairs at our bay of public computers. It is available only at our ‘Patron 4’ computer. Here you will find the VHS converter and a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.
What do I need?
You will need:
- A VHS tape you’d like to convert
- A USB drive with available storage space
- Time. Videos are recorded in real time, so you will need to remain at the computer for the duration of your VHS’ run time. It may take some additional time for the conversion and file saving process. This chart outlines the space you will need to be able to save:
| 10 minutes | 178 MB |
| 20 minutes | 535 MB |
| 60 minutes | 1 GB |
| 90 minutes | 1.6 GB |
| 120 minutes | 2.1 GB |
| 180 minutes | 3.1 GB |
How do I use the VHS converter?
You will find a step-by-step guide at the work station that will guide you through the process. Additionally, staff are happy to help you through the process! For further information, check out this video.
Please Note
Commercial VHS tapes, such as movies or TV shows, cannot be converted. Copying or converting video content that you do not own or have rights to is illegal.
