Accessibility Advisory Committee

The Gravenhurst Accessibility Advisory Committee is an advisory committee of Council. All meetings are open to the public. Through the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), this Committee promotes the removal of barriers and equal access to services for people of all abilities.

Mandate, Vision & Primary Role

Mandate: to advise, assist and make recommendations to Council on matters related to accessibility within the Town of Gravenhurst.

Vision: to promote equal opportunity for all persons within the community, regardless of their needs, and to ensure that all persons are able to participate as fully as possible in all aspects of community life.

Primary Role: to provide advice to Council and reviewing various matters as they relate to accessibility issues within the community.

In addition, the Subcommittee is responsible for:

  • advocating on behalf of persons with disabilities through the promotion of public awareness.
  • on behalf of Council, work with various sectors of the community in promoting and enhancing public awareness with respect to accessibility issues.
  • make recommendations on strategies and policies on the identification and removal of existing barriers and to ensure that no new barriers are created.
  • assist staff in the preparation of the Multi-Year Accessibility Plan and Annual Status Report.
  • review and provide comment on site plans of new and existing municipal facilities, as required.
  • participate on other municipal subcommittees or task forces providing insight into accessibility measures as needed.
